It’s something I hear from orthodontic practice owners all the time.
But here’s a question I often ask in return:
“Have we given our team the training, tools, and confidence to take that ownership?”
After 30+ years working in nearly every role within an orthodontic practice, I’ve learned that most team members genuinely WANT to do a great job.
Sometimes they just need the right support to get there.
Confidence Comes Before Accountability
We can’t expect exceptional performance without providing clear expectations, consistent training, and meaningful feedback.
Think about your own team.
Does everyone understand their responsibilities?
Do they feel confident performing them?
Are they empowered to make decisions?
Or are they constantly waiting for someone to tell them what to do next?
When you invest in your people, you’re investing in your patients, your culture, and your practice’s future.
This Month’s Challenge
Ask each team member one simple question:
“What’s one area of your role where additional training or support would help you feel more confident?”
Then listen.
Choose one opportunity and make a plan to support their growth.
Sometimes the most meaningful investment isn’t expensive. It’s simply intentional.

They’re watching a new assistant become independent, a TC confidently lead a consultation, or a team leader discover their voice.
Those moments remind me why I love what I do.
